This dilemma was not alien to our gaudiya vaisnava acarayas. Bhaktivinode Thakur in his Sri Tattva Sutram writes "Those who think that devotion to God and kindness to the jivas ( souls) are mutually different from each other, and perform accordingly in their life, such persons will not be able to follow the devotional culture. Their performances are only a semblance of devotion. Therefore, all types of beneficence to others; like kindness, friendliness, forgiveness, charity, respect etc.; are included in bhakti. Among these, according to the triple categories, of the recipients viz., high, medium and low, the actions of respect, friendliness, and kindness are the very form of love and the characteristic portion of Bhakti. Charity of medicines, clothes, food, water etc., shelter during adversities, teaching of academic and spiritual educations etc., are the activities included in the devotional culture.... In short, the hearing, chanting and remembrance of the Divine Names and Glories and beneficence to the living beings are the main components of devotional culture." Tattva Sutram 35.
Prabhupada also encouraged the Food for Life program in India and other places of the world. So, from the Vaisnava perspective, true involvement in the devotional culture will naturally draw from the heart empathic feelings for the suffering of the oppressed, both rich and poor. The challenge has been and will always be balancing the two aspects of this devotional culture, on a personal level as well as institutionally. The challenge of maintaining a strict personal, progressive sadhana and dealing with, on a practical level, the problems of the world remains a daunting one. Oftentimes, the tendency is to get consumed by one aspect or the other of devotional cultivation, both individually and institutionally. Should we abandon our duty, as Vaisnavas? Meanwhile, how will you encourage a society that is just and peaceful when nearly all its members (at least in the so-called developed countries) are eating meat, especially the cow? How will you actually challenge Monsanto, for example, that is wreaking such havoc to our environment and to agrarian cultures in general.
Oh prabhu, there are so very many terrible things going on in this world - and yes, it is Kali-yuga. And we do not say this as some kind of callous observation, as in 'what has this to do with us' - but in helpless recognition as to how contaminated the atmosphere today really is ... and how fortunate we are that Mahaprabhu has come, that Harinama is here, and this is what there is for us to provide - because without this, everything is indeed sunk!
If not us, acting as best we can as the messengers of our acaryas, who else can point out that a branch or leaf that is disconnected from the tree cannot find nourishment, can only wither up and dry? Who else can provide the philosophy and practices in regards to reconnecting the leaves and branches to the tree, and in regards to the essential need to water the roots of the tree? Others, who have not received this understanding from a bona fide Guru, may be fully absorbed in trying to take care of one particular group of disconnected leaves and branches, in trying to rescue the coats of one section of people drowning in any particular pond - but that is not our duty to perform, although we can certainly appreciate their efforts to make a difference, while we also encourage them to hear and to chant fully transcendental vibrations that will then inspire their own selfless vision far beyond what their current conditioned perspective allows.
Hare Krsna prabhu-ji, Jaya Sri Radhe!Martin Lyonshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15831327204999733076noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4189063378060469728.post-33375375938081065112013-03-13T11:06:31.531-04:002013-03-13T11:06:31.531-04:00Cont'd:
Srila Prabhupada did not come with a ...Cont'd:
Srila Prabhupada did not come with a message of opening hospitals and schools and so on - he certainly wasn't opposed to such, these are natural products of a sane human society! But sanity was missing when he came here! His intention was to establish a basis of Vaisnavas, bhaktas, brahmins, who could give guidance to others - everyone is meant to attend to their own duty, however poorly our immaturity may have us perform it. Our duty, as Vaisnavas, is to hear attentively from pure devotees, to develop bhakti, and in this way, to develop the internal blessings and potencies to actually affect the hearts of others. Srila Prabhupada gave us Srimad Bhagavatam - right from the beginning Bhagavatam's concern is with the highest welfare of all living beings, in regards to distinguishing reality from illusion. And it provides the answer, in the form of pure Hari-katha, and in the revelation of the yuga-dharma of nama-sankirtan, that is this particular Kali-yuga is fully surcharged with the very highest spiritual emotions and rasas so as to bestow the full Vrindavan conception upon the hearts of all. This is our path - to promote pure bhakti - we may be weak and immature, but still, this is our duty and focus, and we should not further distract our attention from this in the name of regular charity work. This understanding was given to us in the hostory of Srila Prabhupada's first meeting with his own Gurudev - he raised the point that first people should be independent and free (India should be liberated) - and Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati firmly refuted all such mundane considerations.
So Srila Prabhupada came to the west, and taught bhakti-yoga and nam-sankirtan, and that is our only responsibility also.
Martin Lyonshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15831327204999733076noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4189063378060469728.post-23333407525055801572013-03-13T11:05:07.567-04:002013-03-13T11:05:07.567-04:00A difficulty with this whole topic is that everyon...A difficulty with this whole topic is that everyone approaches according to their own perspective - so the very reason so many of us sought out Guru in the first place is that we wanted transcendental guidance, uncompromised by whatever conditionings and attachments distort everyone else's view in regards to the true nature of the actual problems and solutions of life are.
If you speak with a person who still fundamentally identifies with their body, regardless of whatever degree of intellectual conceptualizing regarding spiritual subjects we may have attained, you will naturally hear this very confusion in the name of 'spiritual, and 'good' and 'liberation theological' proposals - the focus will be on material comfort and equality. If the speaker is an African American, it is likely you will hear especial emphasis regarding their historical predicament; likewise if the speaker is gay, or Jewish, or another member of a group that has found itself in an exploited or maltreated minority.
This is all understandable, and worthy of our respectful listening and compassion - but such perspectives are not the place for us to go for a true solution. There are already so many individuals and organizations fully committed to addressing whichever facet of material suffering most strongly calls to them - Bill Gates is spending fortunes on trying to assist so many people in Africa, providing water-filtration, medicine, food and so on - meanwhile, western fossil fuel consumption leading to global warming has in turn resulted in disruption of Africa's seasons - now there is basically drought followed by torrential downpours - the farmers no longer know how or when to plant food, and the continent starves.
Martin Lyonshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15831327204999733076noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4189063378060469728.post-60839760085958061452013-03-12T23:42:54.120-04:002013-03-12T23:42:54.120-04:00Immanent concerns, transcendent realities. Or perhaps erasing the dichotomy itself is part of the solution. But ultimately we judge the transcendental nature of our actions by our meditation and the purity of our devotion, no? Tough topic.
